Our second Christmas Family Concert was held at St Michael’s Church on the afternoon of 7th December, in front of an audience of nearly 300 people. After expenses, almost £1600 was raised for Rowcroft Hospice, and a further £150 from the interval refreshments, for St Michael’s Church Fund. A huge thank you to all who attended!
Some new pieces were included in the programme, alongside old favourites for audience participation. Although most were Christmas songs, the inclusion of ‘A Whole New World’ from Aladdin, and ‘World in Union’ were received well.
We opened the concert with the popular ‘I will Follow Him’ from the film Sister Act. A new piece for us, it begins very gently, then by way of contrast livens up with a gospel beat. Also new this time was ‘We all Stand Together’, which raised hilarity as Lydia donned her ‘frog’ hat!
During the performance, each of the sections in the choir sang a piece of their choosing. The Sopranos sections performed a catchy and upbeat three part harmony ‘Tidings of Comfort and Joy’, based on ‘God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen’. Tenors and Basses enjoyed singing and performing the rhythmic ‘African Noel’. For the Alto section, it was the quiet and thoughtful ‘Mary’s Child’. As is now tradition, Colin, from our Tenor section, sang ‘The Christmas Song’.
‘Star Carol’ and a new version of ‘The Holly and the Ivy’ were two further pieces learnt for this performance. Both of these were tricky pieces to learn, but sound wonderful!
A huge thank you to Lydia, our leader for this term, to our accompanist, Roger, and everyone involved in helping in anyway. Well done to all!
We can see this event fast becoming a Teignmouth Sings tradition!
