Teignmouth Jazz Festival November 15th 2013

“POW ! it gets me every time my feet hit the street…” was how Teignmouth Sings started their performance at the 2013 Teignmouth Jazz Festival on Friday 15th November at the United Reformed Church. Director of Music Jeff Hocking had put together a varied bill of music with a jazz flavour and the audience really appreciated the programme comprising:

Big City Beat        Wonderful World        Apple Tree      Stand By Me      Best of Bond Medley

Aint what you do,  it’s the way that you do it         Sing a Song       Ticket to Ride      Close to You        California Dreaming         He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother             The Rhythm of Life

Solos included:-        ‘Somewhere’     ‘Georgia on my mind’   The Girl from Ipanema’                       ‘Pennies from Heaven’ and ‘Liquid Lunch’

We had great comments after the show. One couple visiting Teignmouth from Spain wrote:

“ We were yesterday in the performance of “Teignmouth Sings”, it was wonderful! we enjoyed it a lot! You have beautiful voices.  Congrats! “

Paignton Methodist Church Performance October 2013

We were very warmly received by a new audience at the Palace Avenue Methodist Church in Paignton on Saturday 19th October 2013. The Choir gave a two hour performance including a number of solos, and at the end of the evening money raised from ticket sales came to £300.00. It was agreed that this should be equally divided between the Methodist Church and ourselves, and we were thus able to donate £150 to Children’s Hospice South West. A great evening!

2013 What a year for Teignmouth Sings!

What a year for Teignmouth Sings!

Teignmouth Sings has gone from strength to strength during the past year, as a result of the hard work put in by Jeff Hocking, our Musical Director, and our enthusiastic and committed members. We continue to add to our growing repertoire, and our performances are always well received.

We use our performances to support charities, and 2013 saw us help to raise funds for a variety of local, national and international charities. These included ‘Volunteering in Health’, when we sang at their Fun Day on the Den. This was our first outdoor performance of the year, and thankfully, it was a dry and bright day, but we had to battle with the breeze, as it whipped up our music scores!

July arrived, and with it came three performances, all well supported. The RNLI fundraising day at Cliffden was the first, when we sang a short selection. This was followed by a full evening of song at St Michael’s Church. What a fantastic evening we had, especially as we had soaring temperatures to contend with, in the summer heatwave! On the Den, for Teignmouth Carnival Week, we sang a programme of a few favourites, including highlights from Mamma Mia and Les Misérables.

Since our summer break, we have had the opportunity to perform to various audiences. We have sung at, what was for us, a new venue; Palace Avenue Methodist Church in Paignton. Our audience was very responsive and complimentary, and have invited our choir to return again this year. This was closely followed by our ‘fringe’ performance for the Teignmouth Jazz Festival, and our repertoire for the evening was linked (albeit loosely) to this musical genré.

Our Christmas performance, supporting Torbay Hospital League of Friends, was enjoyed by another new audience. We are happy that our choir has been invited to sing again for them.

Finally, we were asked, once again, to participate in the URC Carols by Candlelight Service, when we sang from our Christmas repertoire.

If you haven’t taken the opportunity to come along to one of our performances, please do! You may be inspired enough to join us. We have great fun and we’re always happy to welcome new members.

The choir prepare for a fabulous summer

For the summer 2013 performances “Teignmouth sings” rehearsed fresh material by well-known artists new and old.

For Choir Members and the Director of Music, new songs lift our spirits and though sometimes it is a challenge to learn something new, once we’ve “cracked” it there is a real buzz, and the enthusiasm of our singers grows as does their confidence.

Once a small community, our choir is now growing into a much bigger happy family, singing not only music we love but also songs our audiences tell us are a joy to listen to!

Public performances in the summer of 2013 included a performance for Volunteering in Health on the Den, a concert in aid of the RNLI at the Cliffden Hotel, a concert in aid of Children’s Hospice South West and last but not least the great Choir Sing Off! in the marquee on the Den on July 23rd

2012 Teignmouth Jazz Festival Success

Teignmouth Sings held a charity concert on 16th November 2012 at St Michael’s church in Teignmouth. Our performance was very well received by the audience, who had certainly braved the weather to be there. Thanks to all who attended. We raised £118 for Children in Need and £118 for the church. We also donated our subs for the week to Children in Need.
